Thesis writer's guide

Ethical principles

In research-oriented development work, good scientific practice and the ethical principles of research involving human subjects must be observed. Universities of applied sciences are committed to following these guidelines and practices in theses. Therefore, it is important for thesis authors to familiarize themselves with the guidelines on good scientific practice and the ethical principles of research involving human participants, and to apply this knowledge to their own research-oriented development work. The Rectors’ Conference of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences (Arene ry) has drawn up ethical guidelines specifically tailored to the needs of universities of applied sciences. These guidelines should also be studied carefully.

Ethical recommendations for thesis writing at universities of applied sciences

KAMK is committed to following TENK's (The Finnish National Board on Research Integrity) guidelines on good scientific practice. If the thesis involves human-centered research, e.g. interviews or observation, TENK's written guideline; 'The Ethical Principles of Research with Human Participants and Ethical Review in the Human Sciences in Finland' should be taken into account. ARENE (The Rectors’ Conference of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences) has also made a guide for ethical recommendations for thesis writing.

The recommendations are based on Finnish legislation, international and national research ethics principles and policies and recommendations of the scientific community. The recommendations have been formulated as checklists for both students and instructors.

Ultimately, the responsibility for the implementation of good scientific practice in the thesis process rests with the students themselves.
